The Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO) 2023 was held in Lisbon, Portugal. Ahmer Khan presented his poster on optimizing keyboard configuration and Ritam Guha presented his paper on Multi-objective AutoML-Zero at the conference. More information about the GECCO 2023 proceedings can be found in the following link: GECCO 2023.
The Evolutionary Multi-Criterion Optimization (EMO) conference was organized by Leiden University, Netherlands in 2023. COIN Lab had 4 paper acceptances in this conference. Santosh Kumar Balija and Ritam Guha presented their papers in-person in the conference, while Anirudh Suresh and Abhiroop Ghosh presented their papers online. The event was a huge success and Prof. Deb received a special issue on multi-objective optimization from the organizers on the occasion of his 60th birthday. More information about the EMO special issue can be found in the following link: EMO 2023.
Dr. Deb is going to give a lecture about machine learning methods and their use in optimization at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Germany on 6th February, 2023. The lecture has been advertised in a local Magdeburg newspaper named Volkstimme. The excerpt of the news is shown in the image in German Language. The ACM Fellows program recognizes the top 1% of ACM Members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. Fellows are nominated by their peers, with nominations reviewed by a distinguished selection committee. Dr. Deb received the fellows award for technical contributions in evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms and multi-criterion decision support. Only two other researchers working evolutionary computation have received this prestigious award in the past. The entire COIN Lab is proud of out skipper's achievement and we celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake in the Lab.
Fitch Beach award, established by Janet M. Beatty in honor of her uncle, recognizes the most outstanding graduate researchers within the College of Engineering. Each department nominates one PhD student, and awards are based on a review of students’ academic and professional records and on an oral presentation of their research. In 2022, our senior lab member Julian Blank represented Computer Science and Engg. department and received the first place for this award. The entire department and COIN Lab are extremely proud of his achievements.
Dr. Kalyanmoy Deb receives 2022 Withrow Distinguished Scholar honors for excellence in research scholarship during the 32nd Annual Engineering Awards. The recognition is considered among the college’s most prestigious distinctions.
Our lab member Julian Blank competed against other MSU EGR graduate students to win the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. He has been further nominated by the department to represent CSE for the prestigious Fitch Beach Award where he will competing against other EGR departments. Congratulations to Julian and best of luck for the upcoming competition!
Our lab director Dr. Kalyanmoy Deb was awarded the title of University Distinguished Professor in recognition of his exceptional teaching abilities, prominent record of public service, and scholarly, creative and artistic achievements. A proud moment for the entire lab!
Paper titled "Constrained Bi-objective Surrogate-Assisted Optimization of Problems with Heterogeneous Evaluation Times: Expensive Objectives and Inexpensive Constraints" by Julian Blank and Kalyanmoy Deb. has been recognized as the best student paper award in 11th International Conference on Evolutionary Multi-Criterion Optimization.
Yashesh left COINLab and has recently started his post Ph.D. career. We had a virtual Get-together to give him a memorable send-off. We had an awesome time with him since he had joined MSU. We wish you all the best and very successful in your new chapter of life!
Proteek left COINLab and will start his post PhD career. Before a new chapter in his life begins, we had a Get-together to give him a memorable send-off. He has been at MSU since Fall of 2015 and we had an awesome time with him. We wish you all the best with your new job and great success.
We are glad to announce pymoo 0.3.1 has been released. Many new features were added, for instance visualization and decision making: pymoo.org
Paper titled "NSGA-Net: Neural Architecture Search using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm" by Zhichao Lu et. al. has been recognized as the best-paper in The Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference 2019 under EML Track. The research focuses at evolving architectures of Deep Convolution Neural Network by simultaneously considering two conflicting objectives.
Paper titled "Simulation Optimization of Water Usage and Crop Yield Using Precision Irrigation" by Proteek Chandan Roy et. al. has been recognized as the best-poster at 10th International Conference on Evolutionary Multi-Criterion Optimization. The research focuses on optimizing crop yield prediction with minimal water usage using Subsurface Water Retention Technology and predicting the best irrigation schedule. The simulation uses DSSAT and HYDRUS-2D to predict crop yield with different configurations of SWRT membrane.
